Handcrafted Jewelry to Bring Applause...

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between gold-filled and gold-plated?  Which is better?
Gold-filled is made by heat and pressure bonding a thin layer of 14K or 12K gold to a brass core.  Gold-filled is more valuable than gold-plated because it has an actual layer of gold, not just a microscopic film.  Gold-filled is a lifetime piece if treated carefully.  Gold-plated is fine for fun and funky, but the plating will eventually wear off.

What is Vermeil?
Vermeil is defined by law as no less than 100 millionths (100 mils) of an inch of karat gold layered over sterling silver.  Vermeil gives the look and feel of fine karat gold at a more economical price. Care for vermeil is similar to sterling silver.  Store in an airtight container and polish with a fine jeweler's cloth.

Why insist on Swarovski crystals?
Swarovski crystals are regarded as the finest lead crystals in the world.  They are machine cut to exacting standards, with finely matched facets for maximum light reflection resulting in jewelry of intense sparkle and impact.  The Swarovski crystal color palette is incredibly diverse, ranging from intense to the most delicate pale.

How do I care for Sterling Silver?
Sterling tarnishes because the copper that is alloyed with the silver reacts with oxygen to form sulfides.  Store your silver pieces in an airtight container, or a ziplock freezer bag, to inhibit tarnishing.  Look for pieces made with Argentium silver. Because Argentium silver is alloyed with germanium instead of copper, it is highly resistant to tarnishing, and stays bright without much polishing.

How do I care for my jewelry?
In general, remove your jewelry when working with harsh chemicals or doing housework or yardwork.  Wipe your pieces with a soft, clean cotton cloth after wearing to remove oils and grime.  Use a specially treated jewelers' cloth to brighten tarnished pieces.  Contact me or consult a professional jeweler for cleaning gemstone jewelry, as certain stones, such as turquoise, opals, and pearls, need special care.
